{"id":10184,"date":"2010-09-08T16:09:58","date_gmt":"2010-09-08T23:09:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.trektoday.com\/content\/?p=10184"},"modified":"2010-09-08T16:10:10","modified_gmt":"2010-09-08T23:10:10","slug":"happy-anniversary-star-trek","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/trektoday.com\/content\/2010\/09\/happy-anniversary-star-trek\/","title":{"rendered":"Happy Anniversary, Star Trek"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Forty-four years ago tonight, <em>Star Trek<\/em> was one of three shows airing at 8:30 on that Thursday night, and those tuning in saw <em>The Man Trap<\/em>, a story about a strange creature who killed to obtain salt.<\/p>\n<p>Airing on NBC, <em>Star Trek<\/em> was up again ABC&#8217;s <em>The Tammy Grimes Show<\/em>, and the still-popular <em>My Three Sons<\/em> which was airing on CBS.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.trektoday.com\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/StarTrek1966.gif\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-10185\" title=\"StarTrek1966\" src=\"http:\/\/www.trektoday.com\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/StarTrek1966.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"168\" height=\"200\" \/><\/a><em>Star Trek <\/em>lasted only three seasons, dying in spite of a letter-writing campaign which gave it only one more season. That last season aired on Friday Nights from 10-11 PM, an unfortunate timeslot as its prime audience was apt to be away from home on a Friday night.<\/p>\n<p>Syndication brought new fans and new popularity, however. <em>Star Trek: The Animated Series<\/em> was produced and ran on Saturday mornings from 1973-1974 on NBC, followed by 1979&#8217;s <em>Star Trek: The Motion Picture<\/em>. 1982&#8217;s popular <em>Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan<\/em> and a new <em>Star Trek<\/em> television series, <em>Star Trek: The Next Generation<\/em>, kept old fans and brought in new ones.<\/p>\n<p>In 2010,<em> Star Trek<\/em> is still going strong, after six series (including <em>The Animated Series<\/em>), and eleven films. A twelfth film will release in 2012 featuring the new rebooted <em>Star Trek<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s hard to believe that a show which aired in 1966 would still be going strong today.
