{"id":11257,"date":"2011-01-31T12:10:28","date_gmt":"2011-01-31T20:10:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.trektoday.com\/content\/?p=11257"},"modified":"2011-01-31T12:10:28","modified_gmt":"2011-01-31T20:10:28","slug":"original-roddenberry-star-trek-pitch-online","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/trektoday.com\/content\/2011\/01\/original-roddenberry-star-trek-pitch-online\/","title":{"rendered":"Original Roddenberry Star Trek Pitch Online"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Back in 1964,<strong> Gene Roddenberry<\/strong> submitted a sixteen-page pitch for a new series to be called<em> Star Trek<\/em> and fans can now see that pitch online in its entirety.<\/p>\n<p>The pitch, part of which has been published before, includes a description of the characters and some ideas which became episodes during the run of <em>Star Trek<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><a href=\"http:\/\/www.trektoday.com\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/TheCage013111.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-11258\" title=\"TheCage013111\" src=\"http:\/\/www.trektoday.com\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/TheCage013111.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"250\" height=\"208\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>As many fans know, the Captain of the ship (in this case, the U.S.S. Yorktown, not the more-familiar Enterprise) would have been Robert M. April, a &#8220;space-age Captain Horatio Hornblower.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Other characters included: the Executive Officer, Number One, a &#8220;mysterious&#8221; female;\u00a0 the navigator &#8211; Jose Ortegas;\u00a0 the doctor &#8211; Phillip &#8220;Bones&#8221; Boyce;\u00a0 the First Lieutenant, Mr. Spock, who was described as being &#8220;probably half-Martin&#8221;\u00a0 and &#8220;with a heavy-lidded&#8221; and &#8220;satanic&#8221; face; and the Captain&#8217;s Yeoman, a blonde female with the surname of &#8220;Colt.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Several programs that became episodes were mentioned in the pitch, including: <em>The Cage<\/em> (<em>The Menagerie<\/em>), <em>Charlie X, A Piece of the Action, <\/em>and<em> Mudd&#8217;s Women<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Roddenberry had plenty of other story ideas which were included in the pitch. <em>100 A.B.<\/em> would have been the story of life after &#8220;The Bomb.&#8221; &#8220;A terrifying parallel as we examine what might be our own world a few decades after an atomic holocaust,&#8221; is the description of this sobering story.<\/p>\n<p>Another story, <em>Kentucky, Kentucky<\/em>, would have featured an earth colony out in space that had been reduced to a frontier, log-fort life.<\/p>\n<p>Other topics covered in the pitch include casting, language (a telecommunicator device is mentioned), weaponry (laser beams), costuming and specifics regarding the U.S.S.
