{"id":11796,"date":"2011-04-14T14:55:19","date_gmt":"2011-04-14T21:55:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.trektoday.com\/content\/?p=11796"},"modified":"2011-04-14T14:55:19","modified_gmt":"2011-04-14T21:55:19","slug":"back-to-space-con","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/trektoday.com\/content\/2011\/04\/back-to-space-con\/","title":{"rendered":"Back To Space-Con"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A new documentary shows the early days of <em>Star Trek<\/em> conventions in the Bay Area.<\/p>\n<p>In <em>Back to Space-Con<\/em>, fans are transported back in time to Northern California&#8217;s first <em>Star Trek<\/em> convention, held on February 22, 1975.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.trektoday.com\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/SpaceCon041411.gif\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-11798\" title=\"SpaceCon041411\" src=\"http:\/\/www.trektoday.com\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/SpaceCon041411.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"106\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>Older <em>Star Trek<\/em> Fans can remember the days when it was very uncool to be a Trek fan, and the joy in finding others who liked <em>Star Trek<\/em> and getting to see one&#8217;s favorite original series actors at those first conventions.<\/p>\n<p>Fan enthusiasm for the show abounded in the early days and was expressed in the creation of home-made costumes, props and souvenirs. Some fans went a bit too far, though, including one man who changed his name legally to James T. Kirk. &#8220;Well, I never liked my previous name,&#8221; he said, explaining his action.<\/p>\n<p>The documentary, a preview of which can be seen below, features forty minutes of 1970s convention footage.
