{"id":13309,"date":"2011-11-09T10:15:42","date_gmt":"2011-11-09T18:15:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.trektoday.com\/content\/?p=13309"},"modified":"2011-11-09T10:16:28","modified_gmt":"2011-11-09T18:16:28","slug":"star-trek-online-free-to-play-details","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/trektoday.com\/content\/2011\/11\/star-trek-online-free-to-play-details\/","title":{"rendered":"Star Trek Online Free-To-Play Details"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On January 17, 2012, <em>Star Trek Online<\/em> will go free-to-play, with an optional subscription plan available for those players who wants special services.<\/p>\n<p>Those wishing to take advantage of <em>Star Trek Online<\/em>&#8216;s change to free-to-play won&#8217;t even have to pay to get the game before playing, but will be able to download it for free.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><a href=\"http:\/\/www.trektoday.com\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/STOSmall.gif\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-13310\" title=\"STOSmall\" src=\"http:\/\/www.trektoday.com\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/STOSmall.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"106\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>The key to keeping the game interesting, according to <strong>Stephen D&#8217;Angelo<\/strong>, <em>Star Trek Online<\/em> Executive Producer and Chief Technical Officer, is to &#8220;[revisit] the game&#8217;s economy.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In free-to-play, some items will become more difficult to acquire and will therefore be more valuable to a player. &#8220;Dilithium buys you the cool gear,&#8221; said D&#8217;Angelo. &#8220;People who buy Cryptic Points can go to our store and can buy the cool ships, but they can&#8217;t get the cool gear. We&#8217;re going to let people sell their Dilithium to other players for Cryptic Points.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Dilithium is earned during play, and Cryptic points are used to purchase goods and services from Star Trek: Online&#8217;s C-Store, which sells items such as starships, pets and experience boosts.<\/p>\n<p>Players can still subscribe ($14.99 monthly) and become Gold Members.
