{"id":18974,"date":"2012-07-20T12:15:51","date_gmt":"2012-07-20T19:15:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.trektoday.com\/content\/?p=18974"},"modified":"2012-07-20T12:15:51","modified_gmt":"2012-07-20T19:15:51","slug":"beltran-being-vocal-about-chakotay","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/trektoday.com\/content\/2012\/07\/beltran-being-vocal-about-chakotay\/","title":{"rendered":"Beltran: Being Vocal About Chakotay"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-18977\" title=\"BeltranChakotay072012\" src=\"http:\/\/www.trektoday.com\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/BeltranChakotay072012.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"580\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/trektoday.com\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/BeltranChakotay072012.jpg 580w, https:\/\/trektoday.com\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/BeltranChakotay072012-50x19.jpg 50w, https:\/\/trektoday.com\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/BeltranChakotay072012-150x58.jpg 150w, https:\/\/trektoday.com\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/BeltranChakotay072012-300x117.jpg 300w, https:\/\/trektoday.com\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/BeltranChakotay072012-450x175.jpg 450w, https:\/\/trektoday.com\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/BeltranChakotay072012-50x19@2x.jpg 100w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 580px) 100vw, 580px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>Star Trek: Voyager<\/em>&#8216;s<strong> Robert Beltran<\/strong> wasn&#8217;t happy with how Chakotay was used on Voyager, and was vocal about this displeasure in hopes of having the character improved.<\/p>\n<p>At first, the powers-that-be listened to Beltran. &#8220;During the <strong>Michael Piller-Jeri Taylor<\/strong> years, they listened intently,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->But the willingness to listen to Beltran&#8217;s complaints stopped with the arrival of <strong>Brannon Braga<\/strong>. &#8220;I guess when Brannon Braga took over, when the Seven of Nine character made her entrance, the focus changed,&#8221; said Beltran.<\/p>\n<p>Beltran wasn&#8217;t happy with the character not being used to his fullest extent in the show. &#8220;I think writers have an obligation to fill out all the characters if they&#8217;re regular characters on a series,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>The actor went on to explain that Chakotay wasn&#8217;t the only underused character on the show. &#8220;I think several of the characters were diminished \u2013 Chakotay and Tuvok and Kim and Neelix,&#8221; he said. &#8220;I think it was just easier for these new writers that came on to write stories about the captain and about characters that weren&#8217;t really human, like Seven of Nine and the Doctor.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Being vocal carried little risk for Beltran, and he felt that he was speaking for some of the other actors too. &#8220;I&#8217;m just kind of a blunt person and, because I have [a] brain, I can see problems and so I&#8217;m vocal about them,&#8221; he said. &#8220;I think a lot of the actors were feeling the same way, but for me it was like, &#8216;OK, you can fire me if you want to. Go ahead, and I&#8217;ll leave.&#8217; That gave me a certain amount of freedom. I was single at the time. I didn&#8217;t have to worry about a family like everybody else on the show, except maybe <strong>Garrett<\/strong> [<strong>Wang<\/strong>].
