{"id":27581,"date":"2013-07-03T12:52:01","date_gmt":"2013-07-03T19:52:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.trektoday.com\/content\/?p=27581"},"modified":"2013-07-03T12:58:37","modified_gmt":"2013-07-03T19:58:37","slug":"sorry-shatner-no-vulcan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/trektoday.com\/content\/2013\/07\/sorry-shatner-no-vulcan\/","title":{"rendered":"Sorry Shatner; No Vulcan!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-27584\" title=\"PlutoMoons070313\" src=\"http:\/\/www.trektoday.com\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/PlutoMoons070313.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"580\" height=\"225\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Back in February,<em> TrekToday<\/em> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.trektoday.com\/content\/2013\/02\/vulcan-wins\/\">reported<\/a> that <strong>William Shatner<\/strong>&#8216;s campaign to have one of two Pluto moons given the name Vulcan had resulted in a first place finish in the voting, but today comes the news that the International Astronomical Union (IAU) has thumbed its nose at the voters.<\/p>\n<p>Vulcan had finished first in the voting, with 174,062 votes, followed by Cerberus which was second with 99,432 votes.<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->Instead of using Vulcan as a name, the IAU went with an alternate spelling of Cereberus (Kerberos) and added Styx, which had finished third in the voting.<\/p>\n<p>Vulcan was rejected as a name because there were already too many objects named Vulcan in astronomy, including a class of asteroids, said the IAU. Cerberus was also rejected as an asteroid already bears that name, but an alternate Greek spelling was accepted instead.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The IAU gave serious consideration to [Vulcan], which happens to be shared by the Roman god of volcanoes,&#8221; said SETI officials. &#8220;However, because that name has already been used in astronomy, and because the Roman god is not closely associated with Pluto, this proposal was rejected.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;They didn&#8217;t name the moon Vulcan,&#8221; said Shatner, via <em>Twitter<\/em>. &#8220;I&#8217;m sad. I think they used us for promotional purposes!
