{"id":40853,"date":"2015-06-08T10:56:23","date_gmt":"2015-06-08T17:56:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.trektoday.com\/content\/?p=40853"},"modified":"2015-06-08T10:56:23","modified_gmt":"2015-06-08T17:56:23","slug":"asteroid-named-after-nimoy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/trektoday.com\/content\/2015\/06\/asteroid-named-after-nimoy\/","title":{"rendered":"Asteroid Named After Nimoy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-40854\" src=\"http:\/\/www.trektoday.com\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/NimoyAsteroid060815.gif\" alt=\"NimoyAsteroid060815\" width=\"580\" height=\"225\" \/><\/p>\n<p>An asteroid that is in the main asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter has been named for <strong>Leonard Nimoy<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The asteroid, discovered in 1988 was formerly designated as <em>1988 RA5<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->Discovered by Belgian Astronomer <strong>Henri Debehogne<\/strong> on September 2, 1988, <em>1988 RA5<\/em> is now <em>4864 Nimoy<\/em>. The asteroid, roughly six miles (10 km) across, orbits the sun once every 3.9 years.<\/p>\n<p>It turns out though, that there is another asteroid which bears the designation of <em>2309 Mr. Spock<\/em>. Discovered by <strong>James Gibson<\/strong> in 1971, it was named for Gibson&#8217;s pet cat, who was named after <em>Star Trek<\/em>&#8216;s Mr. Spock. Gibson described the cat as also being imperturbable, logical, intelligent, and with pointed ears.<\/p>\n<p>For those interested in seeing <em>4864 Nimoy<\/em>, a fourteen-inch or larger telescope is needed.
