{"id":41436,"date":"2015-08-13T11:52:35","date_gmt":"2015-08-13T18:52:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.trektoday.com\/content\/?p=41436"},"modified":"2015-08-13T11:52:35","modified_gmt":"2015-08-13T18:52:35","slug":"trek-class-gets-shatners-attention","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/trektoday.com\/content\/2015\/08\/trek-class-gets-shatners-attention\/","title":{"rendered":"Trek Class Gets Shatner&#8217;s Attention"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A professor offering a <em>Star Trek<\/em> class got a little attention from Captain Kirk himself.<\/p>\n<p><em>Syracuse University<\/em> Professor <strong>Anthony Rotolo<\/strong> is offering a free online class (open to the public) about <em>Star Trek<\/em> and its effect on the real world.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We will focus on media history and the real-world implications of technologies <em>Star Trek<\/em> started or inspired,&#8221; Rotolo explained. &#8220;We use computer software as weapons. Folks can go out and buy a drone. It&#8217;s a new frontier. I think <em>Star Trek<\/em> still has a lot to say. It&#8217;s as relevant as it ever was.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Students will also learn about the &#8220;history and evolution of the franchise,&#8221; &#8220;science facts and fiction,&#8221; and &#8220;the tradition of using sci-fi storytelling to explore issues such as race, gender and politics.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Shatner learned about the course courtesy of a <em>Twitter<\/em> fan and he told the fan &#8220;watch this!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>He then tweeted out a message to his many Twitter fans. &#8220;Hey @rotolo, can anyone sign up for your class? How do I know you got it right?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There&#8217;s always room for you in #TrekClass, Captain!&#8221; replied Rotolo.<\/p>\n<p>The <em>Star Trek<\/em> class begins in September and runs through December.
