Hartwell,<\/strong> the former <em>Pocket Books<\/em> editor who was responsible for creating the <em>Star Trek<\/em> line for the publishers, is dead at the age of seventy-four.<\/p>\n<p>The cause of death was a brain bleed following a fall which caused head trauma.<\/p>\n<p>Born in 1941, Hartwell&#8217;s publishing career began in 1971 as a consulting sci-fi editor for <em>Signet<\/em>. He worked at <em>Pocket Books, Berkley<\/em> and <em>Tor\/Forge<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Hartwell was nominated forty-one times for <em>Hugo Award<\/em>s, winning <em>Best Professional Editor<\/em> in 2006, and<em> Best Editor Long Form<\/em> in 2008 and 2009. Hartwell won the <em>World Fantasy Award<\/em> twice in 1899, the <em>Milford Award for Life Achievement<\/em> (1990), and the<em> Skylark Award<\/em> for his contributions to sci-fi in 2006.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<em>Pocket Books <\/em>and<em> Simon &amp; Schuster<\/em> are saddened to hear of David G. Hartwell&#8217;s passing,&#8221; the companies said in a statement. &#8220;He leaves behind the powerful legacy of his groundbreaking work and impact on science fiction, including the championing of unforgettable new adventures in the <em>Star Trek<\/em> universe via the<em> Timescape<\/em> imprint and beyond. We extend our deepest sympathies and condolences to his family and loved ones during this difficult time.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Hartwell is survived by his wife <strong>Kathryn Cramer<\/strong>, and his four children; two from a previous marriage.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>David G.
