It’s almost time for the 2016 Shore Leave<\/em> convention, held annually in Hunt Valley, Maryland, just north of Baltimore.<\/p>\n

Shore Leave<\/em> has plenty for fans of Star Trek<\/em> and science fiction, including guest appearances, interesting panels and a large Star Trek<\/em> author presence.<\/p>\n

The Trek-related guests this year include Star Trek: Enterprise<\/em>‘s Anthony Montgomery<\/strong>, Michael Forest<\/strong> (Apollo in Who Mourns for Adonais<\/em>), and Barbara Bouchet<\/strong> (Kelinda in By Any Other Name<\/em>).<\/p>\n

Other guests include Karen Gillan<\/strong> (Saturday only), John Noble, Zoie Palmer, Anthony Lemke<\/strong> and Robbie Amell<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

In what will surely be one of most interesting panels at the convention, due to the recent unveiling of the newly-restored USS Enterprise<\/em> model, Ariel O’Connor <\/strong>and Margaret A Weitekamp<\/strong>, who work at the Smithsonian American Art Museum <\/em>and the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum <\/em>will be on hand to talk about the restoration and no doubt show pictures.<\/p>\n

Science programming topics will include: science in fiction, stargazing, radio astronomy, data science, Planetary Defense: The Art and Science of Asteroid Detection and Characterization, Report from the planetary Defense Coordination Office, Undergraduate Research in Physics, Dark Matter, The Science and Technology of the James Webb Space Telescope, Exploring Exoplanet Atmospheres with the James Webb Space Telescope, Hubble’s 25-Year Space Odyssey, and more!<\/p>\n

Almost fifty guests will represent Star Trek<\/em> publishing, including authors and publishers. A full list of those attending can be found here<\/a>. Many of these authors can be found at the Meet the Pros<\/em> event, which takes place Friday night at 10 PM. In addition to authors, science authors Charles L. Adler, Stephanie J. Slater, Timothy P. Slater, Ray Villard<\/strong> and Margaret A. Weitekamp<\/strong> will be in attendance at Meet the Pros<\/em>.<\/p>\n

There will be ten book premieres at this year’s Meet the Pro<\/em> event, including: Altered States of the Unio<\/em>n, Dayton Ward<\/strong>‘s Hidden Universe: Star Trek: A Travel Guide to Vulcan<\/em>; Elsewhere in the Middle of Eternity, For a Few Gold Pieces More<\/em> (Richard C. White<\/strong>), Rules of Accusation<\/em> (Paula Block\/Terry Erdman<\/strong>), Sacrifice Play – A Tale from the Arbiter Chronicles<\/em> (Steve Wilson<\/strong>), Amulet Keeper’s War<\/em> (Rigel Ailur<\/strong>), Menace in Manatas<\/em> (Roberta Rogow<\/strong>), Time Siege<\/em> (edited by Marco Palmieri<\/strong>) and House of the Healer<\/em> (Jim Johnson<\/strong>).<\/p>\n

Workshops at Shore Leave 38<\/em> include juggling, belly dancing, model building, stargazing, doggie parenting, basic self-defense, and two writing workshops, including one for young adults.<\/p>\n

Other events will include the Seventh Annual Texas Hold-em Poker Tournament<\/em>, Mystery Trekkie Theater 300<\/em>0, dancing at Vic’s Place<\/em>, a TARDIS photo booth, a game room for the gamers, the Temple of Trek<\/em>, Afternoon Tea, costume masquerade, art show, dance, charity auction, blood drive, and filking. And no convention would be complete without a place to buy Trek-themed merchandise!<\/p>\n
