The August issue of Cinefex<\/em> features a cover story on the recently-released Star Trek Beyond<\/em>.<\/p>\n

“Star Trek<\/em> fans won’t want to miss the latest issue of Cinefex<\/em>, the bimonthly film magazine that covers visual effects like no other. Cinefex<\/em> has been covering the field of cinematic visual effects for thirty-six years. On newsstands now, Cinefex 148<\/em> features a breathtaking cover shot of the Starship Enterprise<\/em>, along with a twenty-one-page story on the making of the film based on in-depth interviews with director Justin Lin<\/strong> and the key effects artists who helped bring his unique vision to the screen. “Among the many references studied by the visual effects team was Gosh<\/em>, a music video created by Erik Wernquist<\/strong> for producer and remix artist Jamie xx<\/strong>. ‘The video was about finding a planet and terraforming it,’ said Sean Stranks<\/strong>, visual effects supervisor at Double Negative<\/em>, London. ‘There were a couple of really nice shots where they had bright sun, dirt on the lens, and MIR-style lighting on the ships. We tried a few things like that, and it felt really good.’<\/p>\n

“Even the sleekly contoured U.S.S. Enterprise<\/em> found itself rolling in the dirt.’We worked hard to create shots that really showed the Enterprise<\/em> from a different slant,’ said [production visual effects supervisor] Peter Chiang<\/strong>. ‘We wanted the pearlescent white of NASA<\/em> footage, with the overexposure of shooting on anamorphic film. We wanted to re-create that grittiness, so the Enterprise<\/em> would be blown out in the highlights, and underexposed in the darker areas.'”<\/p>\n
