{"id":44679,"date":"2016-10-10T11:55:26","date_gmt":"2016-10-10T18:55:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.trektoday.com\/content\/?p=44679"},"modified":"2016-10-10T11:55:26","modified_gmt":"2016-10-10T18:55:26","slug":"takei-why-newer-trek-films-were-flawed","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/trektoday.com\/content\/2016\/10\/takei-why-newer-trek-films-were-flawed\/","title":{"rendered":"Takei: Why Newer Trek Films Were Flawed"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>According to <strong>George Takei<\/strong>, the original Mr. Sulu, there is a reason why the newer<em> Star Trek<\/em> films aren&#8217;t as good as the original series.<\/p>\n<p>Takei believes that the films are missing something important. &#8220;They&#8217;re all great action-adventure space operas,&#8221; he said. &#8220;But it&#8217;s missing that <strong>Gene Roddenberry<\/strong> element &#8211; using science fiction as a metaphor to address issues of importance to our society.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>For example, in <em>Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home<\/em>, the movie dealt with an important issue, but did so in an &#8220;engaging, entertaining way, but also in a very enlightening way&#8221; said Takei. &#8220;So the big screen can tell it just as well as on the small screen. It&#8217;s just how you do it. It&#8217;s the writer&#8217;s talent.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Takei expects to see that kind of storytelling on <em>Star Trek Discovery<\/em>. <strong>Bryan Fuller<\/strong> has &#8220;the opportunity now to deal more specifically with issues of our time,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The potential for storytelling in the new TV version is going to be enormous and absolutely tantalizing.
