George Takei<\/strong> received the Icon Award<\/em> at the 2015 Unforgettable Gala<\/em> on Saturday evening.<\/p>\n

The Unforgettable Gala<\/em> was created by James Ryu<\/strong>, the founder and publisher of the award-winning magazines KoreAm Journal <\/em>and Audrey Magazine<\/em>, and the website Kore<\/em>. The Unforgettable Gala<\/em> “recognizes Asian-Americans who have made great achievements in various fields such as music, entertainment, sports, journalism, community and more.”<\/p>\n

Takei received the award from John Cho<\/strong>. “You’ve always reminded me of the ideals of Star Trek<\/em>,” he said, “infinite diversity in infinite combinations, [which] is being assailed in our country right now. This is a dark time for people of color, for non-Christians, for LGBT citizens, for our ecology, and for our Constitution itself. We are being tested as a people in a historically unique way. I want to thank George for always using his prolific platform and in turn risking to speak out when he has seen injustice. In this way, George, you have never been a model minority.”<\/p>\n

“Well all the icons I know are dead; I’m very much alive,” said Takei, speaking to Variety<\/em> about receiving the award. “I’m going to redefine what they mean by icon.”<\/p>\n

Other winners included Ken Jeong<\/strong> (Actor of the Year<\/em>), Wong Fu Productions<\/em> (Digital Influencer Award<\/em>), Brian Tee<\/strong> (BMW’s Ultimate Drive Award<\/em>), Jennifer<\/strong> Yuh Nelson<\/strong> (Director of the Year<\/em>), and Steve Aoki<\/strong> (Music Vanguard Award<\/em>).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
