The new issue of Entertainment Weekly<\/em> has been released and Star Trek: Discovery<\/em> is on its cover this issue.<\/p>\n

In this new issue, EW “goes behind the scenes of the upcoming CBS All Access<\/em> series Star Trek: Discovery<\/em> and the twelve-year mission to bring the ground-breaking franchise back to TV in its boldest version yet.<\/p>\n

“With unprecedented exclusive access, EW<\/em> tours the Discovery<\/em> sets and talks with the show’s cast (led by The Walking Dead<\/em>‘s Sonequa Martin-Green<\/strong>), producers, and CBS<\/em> insiders about the epic and sometimes combative challenge of making a compelling 21st-century drama that updates a beloved 20th-century franchise which takes place in a visionary 23rd century.”<\/p>\n

In their preview of their cover story, EW<\/em> gives Trek fans a peek into a scene being filmed.<\/p>\n

“The imposing Captain Gabriel Lorca strides across the Starship Discovery<\/em> bridge, squinting at the raging battle on the viewscreen, rattling off orders to his crew with rapid precision. There’s a Federation ship under attack by Klingons, and the Discovery<\/em> is rushing to join their fight. ‘Lock on the Bird of Prey!’ Lorca barks. ‘Basic pattern Beta 9. Hard to port! Fire at something, for God\u2019s sakes!’<\/p>\n

“Too late.<\/p>\n

“The Klingons blast the Discovery<\/em>. Lorca and his shipmates lurch hard to one side. The high-tech set’s thousands of lights flicker anxiously, conveying the ship’s wounds.<\/p>\n

“The director halts the action and Lorca, played by British actor Jason Isaacs<\/strong> of Harry Potter<\/em> fame, steps off the stage. The episode’s writer, Kirsten Beyer<\/strong>, approaches to give a correction on his ‘for God\u2019s sakes’ ad lib.<\/p>\n

“‘Wait, I can’t say ‘God’?\u201d Isaacs asks, amused. ‘I thought I could say ‘God’ or ‘damn’ but not ‘goddamn.”<\/p>\n

“Beyer explains that Star Trek<\/em> is creator Gene Roddenberry<\/strong>‘s vision of a science-driven 23rd-century future where religion basically no longer exists.<\/p>\n

“How about ‘for f\u2014’s sake’?’ he shoots back. ‘Can I say that?’<\/p>\n

“You can say that before you can say ‘God,” she dryly replies.”<\/p>\n
