Martin<\/strong>, best-known for his <em>A Song of Ice and Fire<\/em> series, which inspired <em>Game of Thrones<\/em>, was once turned down by <em>The Next Generation<\/em> when he applied for a writing job.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I had an interview with<em> Star Trek: The Next Generation<\/em> for a possible job as a staff writer,&#8221; said Martin. &#8220;I remember coming into the office of this producer, who thankfully did not last long on the show and you can see why when I tell the story.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;He said &#8216;I don&#8217;t know who you are; can you tell me your credentials.&#8217; And I said &#8216;I am just coming off <em>Twilight Zone<\/em> where I worked for a while, but before that I wrote novels and short stories. I am primarily a science fiction writer.'&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>And unbelievably, the producer came back with, &#8220;Oh really, well <em>Star Trek<\/em> is not a science-fiction show; it is a people show.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I was fooled by the photon torpedoes and starships,&#8221; said Martin. &#8220;I was misled. Needless to say I did not get that job.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>George R.R.
