Wilson Cruz<\/strong> (Dr. Hugh Culber) spoke about the importance of showing gay relationships in today’s television shows and movies.<\/p>\n

As a Trek fan, Cruz was well-aware that gay relationships were missing from other Trek show prior to Star Trek: Discovery<\/em>. “As a fan, I was as disappointed as everyone else that we never saw an openly LGBT person in lead roles throughout the franchise,” he said. “Anthony <\/strong>[Rapp<\/strong>] and I, when we were making this show, we had the audience in mind. This rendition of Star Trek<\/em> is really allowing for people to consider that there’s a second side to every story. There has to be a way to come together and appreciate each other for our differences rather than feel threatened by them.<\/p>\n

“These things don’t just happen automatically. People make it happen. And in this show, you are going to see this world that Gene<\/strong> Roddenberry<\/strong> dreamt of. We’re all at a point where we\u2019ve decided what kind of world we want to live in.”<\/p>\n

Culber and Stamets “represent hope and an ideal that we’re all working for,” said Cruz. “It will be a larger-than-life love story in the vein of Romeo and Juliet. Very rarely do we see in pop culture an LGBT relationship that stands up on those terms. We really haven’t been allowed to see it in the past.”<\/p>\n
