William Shatner<\/strong> will receive an award from the National Reining Horse Association<\/em> later this year.<\/p>\n

The award will be the NRHA Dale Wilkinson Lifetime Awar<\/em>d, which is “named after the legendary reining horse trainer known as the ‘father of reining,’ Dale Wilkinson<\/strong>, the first inductee into the NRHA<\/em> Hall of Fame.”<\/p>\n

The actor’s love of horses is well-known, and he has a charity, Ahead With Horses<\/em>, that “gives physically and mentally challenged children the thrill of riding a horse \u2014 and boosts their confidence and self-esteem, often with life-changing results.”<\/p>\n

Shatner has also hosted the Hollywood Charity Horse Show<\/em> at the Los Angeles Equestrian Center<\/em> for more than twenty years. The annual event benefits Ahead With Horses<\/em>, and other L.A.-based charities.<\/p>\n

In addition, Shatner has promoted and raised funds for the sport of reining. According to Wikipedia<\/em>, reining is “a western riding competition for horses where the riders guide the horses through a precise pattern of circles, spins, and stops. All work is done at the lope (a slow, relaxed version of the horse gait more commonly known worldwide as the canter), or the gallop (the fastest of the horse gaits).”<\/p>\n

He has also introduced reining to other celebrities, including Tim Allen, Sarah McLaughlin, Neal McCoy<\/strong>, and Willie Nelson<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
