Author Vonda Neel McIntyre<\/strong>, best-known to Trek fans for her Trek novels, has died at the age of seventy of pancreatic cancer.<\/p>\n

The death was announced on her CaringBridge<\/em> webpage yesterday by Jeanne Gomoll<\/strong>. “Vonda N. McIntyre died at 6:25 pm, Pacific Time, in no pain and surrounded by friends. The funeral home has collected her body which will be cremated. Vonda was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer on February 7; her death came swiftly, just short of two months later. Vonda’s posse and local friends will get together for a brief gathering within the next couple days. A reception that is open to the public will be scheduled within about a month and will be announced here on CaringBridge<\/em> as soon as the details are known. Good-bye, Vonda.”<\/p>\n

Born in 1948 in Louisville, Kentucky, McIntyre’s family eventually moved to Seattle where she eventually attended the University of Washington<\/em> in 1970. She studied genetics in the University of Washington<\/em>‘s graduate school.<\/p>\n

In 1971, she helped found the Clarion West Writers Workshop<\/em> in Seattle.<\/p>\n

McIntyre won her first Nebula Award<\/em> in 1974 for 1973’s novelette Of Mist, and Grass, and Sand.<\/em> This novelette later became part of the novel Dreamsnake<\/em> (1978), which won 1979’s Hugo <\/em>and Nebula Awards.<\/em><\/p>\n

Star Trek<\/em> fans knew her for her Trek novels, including Enterprise: The First Adventure, The Entropy Effect; Duty, Honor, Redemption<\/em>, and the novelizations of Star Trek II through IV<\/em>. Hikaru Sulu owed his first name to McIntyre and that first name became official in Star Trek VI<\/em>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
