When it came to writing about James T. Kirk and Mr. Spock, co-writers Roberto Orci<\/b> and Alex Kurtzman<\/b> discovered that in fact, they were really writing about themselves.<\/p>\n
As reported by the L.A. Times<\/a>, the writing duo had written part of the script when the realization came to them that they weren’t just writing about Kirk and Spock. “We didn’t even realize we were writing about ourselves until we were halfway through the script,” said Orci, who is the logical one. “That was a little embarrassing.”<\/p>\n That may have been embarrassing, but meeting the actor responsible for playing the original Spock was downright intimidating. Leonard Nimoy<\/b> gave off a “‘Who are you guys and what are you up to?’ vibe,” said Kurtzman. “It was incredibly intimidating.”<\/p>\n Being selected for and writing for Star Trek XI<\/i> was emotional for all three of them; Orci, Kurtzman and Nimoy. “We told him that we couldn’t do it without him,” explained Kurtzman. “We told everything and how he was the key to the movie, that the story doesn’t work without him. There was a very long silence and he got misty.”<\/p>\n “He had retired and turned down many offers to return to this character,” Kurtzman added, “so this was asking the greatest gunslinger to strap on the pistol one more time.
