George Takei <\/strong>and his husband Brad Altman<\/strong> will be the first couple to appear on a celebrity edition of The Newlywed Game<\/em>.<\/p>\n

The Newlywed Game<\/em> has been on and off of television since its debut in 1967, but has never featured a gay couple. According to Kelly Goode<\/strong>, programming chief of GSN, the former Game Show Network, on which the show now appears, this was due to the game’s rules which required that a couple needed to be in a legally-recognized marriage.<\/p>\n

But the change “made sense for GSN,” said Goode. “It seems like the show has always reflected the times in terms of marriages depicted and this felt like the next logical step.”<\/p>\n

Although together for twenty-two years, Takei and Altman were only married last September and have just celebrated their first anniversary. “What we want to display is the normality and the joy of having a happy union,” said Takei.<\/p>\n

Takei and Altman are preparing for their appearance, according to Takei. Takei is taking careful note of what Altman orders in restaurants and what he wears.<\/p>\n

The episode in which Takei and Altman will appear will be taping soon and is expected to air in October.<\/p>\n

Other celebrity players with their new spouses will appear this season on The Newlywed Game<\/em>, including Davy Jones<\/strong> of The Monkees, Christopher Knigh<\/strong>t (Peter Brady) of The Brady Bunch<\/em> and Jonny Fairplay<\/strong> of Survivor<\/em>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
