{"id":7930,"date":"2009-12-07T18:25:32","date_gmt":"2009-12-08T02:25:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.trektoday.com\/content\/?p=7930"},"modified":"2009-12-07T18:25:32","modified_gmt":"2009-12-08T02:25:32","slug":"vss-enterprise","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/trektoday.com\/content\/2009\/12\/vss-enterprise\/","title":{"rendered":"VSS Enterprise"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Sir Richard Branson<\/strong>&#8216;s latest project will take passengers to space and back.<\/p>\n<p>Branson, the founder of Virgin Galactic, unveiled his latest rocket plane today for outsiders. &#8220;This is truly a momentous day,&#8221; he said. &#8220;The team has created not only a world first, but also a work of art.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->The VSS Enterprise, an eight person vehicle (six passengers, two crewmembers,) had been in development for several years and kept under wraps. It is named after its namesake from <em>Star Trek<\/em>, and is a successor to a vehicle which flew to space in 2004 and won an Ansari X prize.<\/p>\n<p>A mothership, the WhiteKnightTwo (VMS Eve) will carry the VSS Enterprise to its launch altitude of 50,000 feet. The two-and-a-half hour trips, up and down flights that won&#8217;t orbit the earth, will include about five minutes of weightlessness.<\/p>\n<p>The first test flights should begin next year, with full-fledged space launches set to commence in 2011.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-7931\" title=\"120709VSSEnterprise\" src=\"http:\/\/www.trektoday.com\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/12\/120709VSSEnterprise.gif\" alt=\"120709VSSEnterprise\" width=\"250\" height=\"140\" \/><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Sir Richard Branson&#8216;s latest project will take passengers to space and back.
