In a question and answer session after the showing of Star Trek XI<\/em> at the Beverly Hills WGA theater on Wednesday night, Star Trek XI<\/em> Co-writers Roberto Orci <\/strong>and Alex Kurtzman<\/strong> talked about Star Trek XII<\/em>.<\/p>\n

The two writers covered familiar ground but also spoke about the next movie, including setting, villains and pressure to make a good movie.<\/p>\n

\"KurtzmanOrci01222010\"One comment may set some fan fears at ease. The duo doesn’t want to be repetitive in their storytelling. “We would never do a remake,” said Orci.”<\/p>\n

As for the timeframe of the movie, “it will be some time in the five year mission,” said Orci. “But that is a question. Should we pick them up immediately the next day or should it be later, we are still discussing that.”<\/p>\n

Plenty of talk has centered around the villain of the next movie, and the pair spoke about the importance of the villain. “I think our idea on this is that the first of any series is about them [the crew] coming together or the formation,” said Kurtzman. “I couldn’t really tell you what Jeff Bridge<\/em>s was doing in Iron Man<\/em>, but it doesn’t matter at all because it is all about Iron Man<\/em> becoming Iron Man<\/em>. Whereas I think sequels are very much about the villain. Because while [in the first one] the villain serves to bring the crew together, the second one I think has to be a true challenging of what that family is about. That is why Wrath of Khan<\/em> was so amazing. Khan tested each one of them and ultimately asked for the ultimately sacrifice, and that is why that movie held up so well.”<\/p>\n

Writing the sequel is more stressful than writing Star Trek XI<\/em> was. “Frankly I feel more pressure because we were so confident when we came up with the idea of how to bridge canon, and yet free ourselves from canon,” said Orci. “Now we have no excuses for anything, now we are free. Now we don’t have the benefit of low expectations.”<\/p>\n
