{"id":8938,"date":"2010-04-21T12:47:50","date_gmt":"2010-04-21T19:47:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.trektoday.com\/content\/?p=8938"},"modified":"2010-04-21T12:47:50","modified_gmt":"2010-04-21T19:47:50","slug":"shatner-for-governor-general","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/trektoday.com\/content\/2010\/04\/shatner-for-governor-general\/","title":{"rendered":"Shatner For Governor General"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>When the current Governor General steps down this year, readers of <em>The Mark<\/em>, a Canadian online political publication, have a candidate to replace her, the one and only Captain Kirk!<\/p>\n<p>In a very informal poll, Shatner is handily beating the other candidates, which include hockey stars <strong>Bobby Orr <\/strong>and<strong> Wayne Gretzky<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><a href=\"http:\/\/www.trektoday.com\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/ShatnerStock1.gif\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-8939\" title=\"ShatnerStock\" src=\"http:\/\/www.trektoday.com\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/ShatnerStock1.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"162\" height=\"250\" \/><\/a>The Governor General is the viceregal representative of Queen Elizabeth, who is appointed by the Queen to carry out most of the monarch&#8217;s constitutional and ceremonial duties in Canada.<\/p>\n<p>Last year, Shatner made it clear that he would prefer another Canadian political office. &#8220;I must, with my deepest thanks, turn down your honorable intent to advance me as governor general,&#8221; he said. &#8220;Besides which, I don&#8217;t have time to be governor general. As prime minister I can lead Canada into even greater exploits.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>But this year, could it be that he is reconsidering? &#8220;I&#8217;m being drafted by various groups to run for Governor General,&#8221; Shatner tweeted recently. &#8220;Would they accept me if I campaign for salmons&#8217; rights?
