{"id":9269,"date":"2010-05-25T11:10:11","date_gmt":"2010-05-25T18:10:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.trektoday.com\/content\/?p=9269"},"modified":"2010-05-25T11:05:31","modified_gmt":"2010-05-25T18:05:31","slug":"gerald-fried-amok-time-music-composer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/trektoday.com\/content\/2010\/05\/gerald-fried-amok-time-music-composer\/","title":{"rendered":"Gerald Fried: Amok Time Music Composer"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>One of the best-known pieces of <em>Star Trek<\/em> music, composed by <strong>Gerald Fried<\/strong>, comes from the original series episode <em>Amok Time<\/em>, where Spock and Kirk face off on Vulcan in a fight to the death.<\/p>\n<p>This piece of music, known as either &#8220;The Ritual&#8221; or &#8220;Ancient Battle&#8221; has been used in other shows and movies, such as <em>Futurama<\/em> (<em>Why Must I Be a Crustacean in Love?<\/em>) and <em>Cable Guy<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><a href=\"http:\/\/www.trektoday.com\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/Fried052510.gif\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-9270\" title=\"Fried052510\" src=\"http:\/\/www.trektoday.com\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/Fried052510.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"118\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>Fried explained how he came to work on <em>Star Trek<\/em>, where he also composed music for <em>Shore Leave, Catspaw, Friday&#8217;s Child <\/em>and<em> The Paradise Syndrome<\/em>, and why he only worked on five original series episodes. &#8220;<strong>Bob Justman<\/strong> knew of my work, and hired me when the opportunity arose,&#8221; he said. &#8220;The series ended shortly after I worked with them.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>When asked how it felt to have become part of the musical lexicon of every single generation of composers since he created the music for <em>Amok Time<\/em>, Fried said that it was &#8220;one of life&#8217;s continuing pleasures.&#8221; Fried also enjoyed having his grandchildren discover that he had scored the fight theme. &#8220;I find it more fun to have the grandkids, four of whom are graduating high school and college, this month and next, stumble on the credits on their own.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Working on<em> Star Trek<\/em> was a positive experience for Fried. &#8220;I enjoyed all the <em>Star Trek<\/em>s.
