{"id":9316,"date":"2010-05-28T14:15:01","date_gmt":"2010-05-28T21:15:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.trektoday.com\/content\/?p=9316"},"modified":"2010-05-28T14:15:01","modified_gmt":"2010-05-28T21:15:01","slug":"saldana-no-dance-no-star-trek","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/trektoday.com\/content\/2010\/05\/saldana-no-dance-no-star-trek\/","title":{"rendered":"Saldana: No Dance, No Star Trek"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Classical dance training helped lead <strong>Zo\u00eb Saldana<\/strong> to movie roles, including S<em>tar Trek XI<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Saldana, thirty-one-years old, took classical dance for eleven years and her classical dance training led to her first movie role as a ballet dancer in 2000&#8217;s <em>Center Stage<\/em>, a movie about twelve young dancers hoping to be chosen to join the American Ballet Company.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><a href=\"http:\/\/www.trektoday.com\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/Saldana0414101.gif\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-9317\" title=\"Saldana041410\" src=\"http:\/\/www.trektoday.com\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/Saldana0414101.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"146\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>&#8220;I was a classical dancer for 11 years,&#8221; said Saldana. &#8220;I went to boarding school in the Caribbean even though I was born in New York. So when I came back to the US, I was graduating from high school and didn&#8217;t want to dance any more. My mom gave me a year off, but I took two. Then I started auditioning, doing commercials and little plays.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>While doing one of these plays, Saldana was noticed. &#8220;I was doing a play and a manager was watching the show and I got signed up,&#8221; she said. &#8220;You go from Burger King commercials to a Coca-Cola campaign to <em>Law And Order<\/em>. Every New York actor does <em>Law And Order<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;From there, I was booked for a movie called <em>Center Stage<\/em>. If it had not been for my ballet background, that would have never have happened.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;That was the first vehicle that got me an agent and then, you know, Uhura in <em>Star Trek<\/em>. Now I&#8217;m here.
