Decipher Acquires Official Star Trek Fan Club
By ChristianFebruary 13, 2001 - 12:51 AM
On Friday, Decipher announced that it has acquired FANtastic Media, the company behind the official Star Trek fan club and the Star Trek Communicator, showing the company's strong commitment to the Star Trek franchise.
As part of the deal, Decipher now owns the Fan Club's online store and the Star Trek Communicator Magazine, but also the official Star Wars Fan Club. All 40 employees of FANtastic will continue to be employed by the company, and in fact Decipher has said it will soon announce several new fan club licenses for the company.
"The combination of two of our most valued licensees will give Star Trek's loyal fans an even more dynamic experience with unique offerings," said Teri Helton at Viacom. Indeed, this move has made Decipher one of the most important Star Trek licensees, as besides its long-running Customisable Card Game license it also recently snatched away the role-playing game license from under the nose of Wizards of the Coast.
More on this deal can be found in the full press release, which contains quotes by Decipher CEO Warren Holland and FANtastic Media founder and president Dan Madsen.
