Takei Obtains Wedding License
By T'BonzJune 18, 2008 - 8:15 PM
George Takei and his partner Brad Altman were among the first same-sex couples to obtain marriage licenses in West Hollywood yesterday.
As reported by eonline.com, after twenty-one years together, the couple made plans to marry on September 14, after gay marriage was legalized in California last month.
"I think it's a glorious California morning to make history," said Takei, as reported by the Los Angeles Times. "Congratulations to all of us. May equality live long and prosper."
Takei and Altman paid $70 for the marriage license, which is good for ninety days. They had not married earlier in San Francisco (which had permitted gay marriage in 2004) because they wanted the marriage to be legal. The San Francisco marriages were voided by court order. And they did not marry in Massachusetts where gay marriage is legal, because they wished to marry in California.
"It's going to be the only day like this in our lives and it is the only day like this in the history of America," said Takei.
