Bead Me Up, Scotty

Mirror Universe, a unique art show featuring artist Devorah Sperber's beaded Star Trek art, opens this month at Caren Golden Fine Art gallery in New York.

As reported by Wired, Sperber's unique take on the Star Trek world is created out of beads and spools of thread. Mirror Universe is an allusion to the Star Trek Mirror, Mirror episode from the original series.

"The concept and title for this exhibition gelled when I realized every Star Trek series had at least one episode based on the concept of a mirror or parallel universe, which fit in with my ongoing interest in the link between art and science, human perception and subjective reality," said Sperber.

A thirty-seven and a half by sixty-inch photo of Spock took one thousand, two hundred spools of thread to make. An image of Star Trek: The Next Generation's holodeck took nine thousand, six-hundred spools. An image of Captain Kirk using twenty-five thousands semi-translucent plastic beads strung onto monofilament is supposed to recreate the look of Kirk beaming up.

"The beaded figures are the most time-consuming works I have done to date," said Sperber. "In addition to laying out the beads in the correct order and stringing them onto monofilament, aligning the beads and attaching them to a hanging apparatus took weeks and weeks for each figure."
