Actors Talk Directing

Melissa J. Perenson, writer for the Sci-Fi Magazine (a publication of the Sci-Fi Channel), has written a new article about the many Trek actors who have been given a chance by the producers to actually direct episodes of the series. With over a dozen actors from the latest three series, in addition to of course Leonard Nimoy and William Shatner, Star Trek is quite a stand-out in the world of entertainment. In the article, Rick Berman explains how this actually started:
"The person to blame for all this is probably Jonathan [Frakes]," laughs Trek executive producer Rick Berman. "He came to me in the first year of The Next Generation and told me that he was interested in becoming a director. And I said to him, 'Go for it.' I made everything available to him, as long as it was on his own time when he wasn't working. He could come to production meetings, he could go to optical meetings, he could sit in on script meetings, he could sit with the editors, he could sit with me when I was working with the editors, he could hang out with the cameramen and learn as much as he wanted. It was about a year and a half later [of constantly] doing this that we decided, finally-I think it was in the 3rd season-that we would give him a shot at it."
In the full article, most of the Trek actors-turned directors (including Jonathan Frakes, Patrick Stewart and Robert Duncan McNeill are interviewed about their experiences directing Trek. Thanks go out to Elaine Butler for this!
