Abrams Cohort Giacchino To Score 'Star Trek XI'

Longtime J.J. Abrams collaborator Michael Giacchino will reportedly compose the score for Star Trek XI, a film co-produced by other frequent Abrams associates Damon Lindelof and Bryan Burk and reportedly to focus on Kirk and Spock's early careers.
"It's kind of on the distant radar. I know they're working on it. [But] it is so far away we haven't even discussed it yet," Giacchino told IGN Filmforce. Previously, the composer write music for Abrams' TV shows Alias and Lost, as well as for Disney's animated film The Incredibles and teen superhero movie Sky High.
Asked whether he would borrow themes from previous Star Trek films and television episodes, Giacchino said that he would likely take a similar approach to his work on Mission: Impossible III, in which he referenced previous scores for the franchise but did not try to be comprehensive. "I think that ultimately you might pick the theme that you think is the important one and utilize that in a certain way and then go completely somewhere else with it," Giacchino explained. "Not that it's better or worse but just different."
Giacchino attended the release party for the second season of Lost on DVD and said that it was fun to take a well-known theme in a new direction where no previous composer had gone before.
