Ohio Excelsior Rally Report

By Christian
April 25, 2000 - 10:12 PM

Chris Stephenson, webmaster for the U.S.S. Maximillian (a Trek fan club in Ohio), just sent in the following short report regarding the Excelsior rally that took place this Saturday in Columbus, Ohio, in front of the local UPN affiliate WWHO Channel 53:

Hello, just would like to share my insights on the local rally here in Columbus, Ohio. I was unable to attend, as I showed up an hour too late, and those that attended didn't have much good to say about it. About a dozen or so attended here, but it was very cold so that may have something to do with it. 500 people nationwide vs. about a few thousand expected? well... I guess it could have been worse...I guess.

On his web site, Chris also writes that "as expected, it tanked and tanked hard, as only a few people showed up, and some of them stayed in their van the whole time." In addition, he mentions that "reports from elsewhere showed sad sights, as almost no-one attended, and those that did seemed to regret it."

As we reported yesterday, campaign organiser Russ Haslage said that about 500 people nationwide participated in the rallies. As the official rally site lists fourteen locations where demonstrations would be organised, that means each regional rally should have been attended by 35 people for this to be the case. By comparison, the Los Angeles main drive was attended by about 30 people, according to Haslage.

Meanwhile, Pocket Books has now received 475 mails in support of a Captain Sulu nove, after 73 new letters arrived today. A thousand need to be sent before May 1 in order for Pocket to publish a Sulu novel. Thanks go out to Psi Phi's progress report page for this!
