A German science fiction spoof that lampoons Star Trek, (T)Raumschiff Surprise - Periode 1, is a surprise box office hit in Europe.
Variety reported via Yahoo! that director Michael Herbig's film had made German box office history by taking in approximately $13.3 million US during its opening weekend, including 625,000 opening day viewers on Thursday, July 22nd.
The parody of Star Trek, Star Wars and numerous other genre franchises is setting German records for viewers per screen and has even landed a promotional tie-in with McDonald's, which is marketing a "Chicken Premiere Surprise Menu" and Happy Meal-type tie-in toys.
Herbig, who plays "Mr. Spuck" in the comedy (whose characters also include "Captain Kork" and a time-travel plot involving Martians), previously made a western spoof, Manitu's Shoe. That film became the highest grossing German film of all time. Currently playing on 900 screens, (T)Raumschiff Surprise - Periode 1" has broken opening weekend records in Austria as well as in Germany.
The film's official web site is here. The original box office article is at Yahoo!.
