Joining Anne-Marie Duff in the winner's circle, Patrick Stewart wins best actor award.
As reported at the Evening Standard, Patrick Stewart beat out stiff competition to win the best actor award given out by the Evening Standard. He won out over Charles Dance (Shadowlands), Robert Lindsay (The Entertainer) and Mark Rylance (Boeing, Boeing).
"It's wonderful," said Stewart. "We're all aglow. All of us who believe the best possible theater should be in London are thrilled." Stewart was praised by the critics, who said that his performance showed him to be in "absolute command of his art."
Other winners were the aforementioned Anne-Marie Duff (Elizabeth I in "The Virgin Queen"), who won best actress for her performance of Joan of Arc in Saint Joan, and Rupert Goold, who won best director for Macbeth.
