George Takei will receive an award at the 25th Annual GLAAD (Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation) Media Awards ceremony in New York.

Takei will be receiving the Vito Russo Award at the ceremony.

The Vito Russo Award is “presented to an openly lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender media professional who has made a significant difference in promoting equality. Previous recipients include Anderson Cooper, Ricky Martin, Rosie O’Donnell, Alan Cumming, Cynthia Nixon, Nathan Lane, Cherry Jones, Elton John, k.d. lang, and Tom Ford.”

“Few voices have been as outspoken in support of equality as George Takei,” said Sarah Kate Ellis, GLAAD President and CEO.

The 25th Annual GLAAD Media Awards will be held in New York City at the Waldorf Astoria on May 3.

  1. His Narcissus Award for Excellence in Self-Glorification will be held at the post office while he’s off attending this other thing.

  2. Who cares? These kinds of awards are more about politics anyway, and why I liked Sulu, despite Takei’s inflated ego, he wasn’t even the most important or interesting member of the TOS cast.

  3. Bill Shatner is the one who has an inflated ego. And George Takei is an important and interesting member of the TOS cast.

  4. I’m not going to say Shatner doesn’t have an ego, but so does Takei, who may in fact have a larger one. Fact is Shatner was THE STAR next to Nimoy and Kelly. Takei was a bit actor whose importance was added on thanks to the movies. Farnkly, had Star Trek ended with the original show, no one would know or care about George Takei, but Shatner would still be there. A basic understanding of 1960’s TV goes a long way in understanding the issues here. Shatner, Nimoy and later Kelly were the ones billed on the intro, they were the stars.

Further, since coming out of the closet, Takei has shown himself to be a real jerk as if somehow being gay wasn’t the only thing about the man he was hiding from everyone. It’s been Takei. not Shatner, who has kept this feud thing going. Everything Takei does these days is about fueling his growing ego. I’ve lost a lot of respect for him the last few years while Shatner has gained more of my respect. I won’t say Bill Shatner is an angel, but when was the last time Takei held an annual charity for children? The best Takei can do is back issues that are at best politically divisive and then remind everyone why William Shatner sucks. What a jerk.

I dare George Takei to back a charity for as many years as William Shatner has that more of the population than hardline Liberals would care about. Something that benefits something like, well, children!
