Star Trek into Darkness J.J. Abrams will be receiving an award from The Visual Effects Society.

The award will be presented to Abrams during the 13th Annual VES Awards ceremony, to be held February 4.

Abrams will receive the Visionary Award. This award “recognizes an individual who has uniquely and consistently employed the art and science of visual effects to ‘foster imagination and ignite future discoveries by way of artistry, invention and groundbreaking work.'”

“J.J. Abrams has consistently elevated not just the technical aspect of visual effects, but also the emotional,” said VES board chair Jeffrey A. Okun. “He has redefined the relationship between the viewer and the story – you can easily see this from the epic cult followings of his highly engaging work, a testament to his expert blending of visual effects, evocative characters and a remarkable imagination.”

Previous winners of the Visionary Award include Christopher Nolan, Ang Lee, and Alfonso Cuarón.

  1. Who would have thought that the VES guys have a sense of irony? Too bad they didn’t name his category the Massive Lens Flare Award. 🙁

  2. An award for visual effects is about what I’d expect for Mr. Abrams. Too bad his feel for the characters and the story doesn’t match his feel for whizzy effects.
