Hyde Passes

1 min read

Bruce Hyde, best-known to original series fans as Kevin Riley, has died at the age of seventy-four.

The cause of death was throat cancer.

According to his wife Susan Saetre, Hyde’s last year was “awesome,” including a retirement party that he “jokingly called a ‘living wake,” and time with his loved ones. “He was able to say what he needed to say,” she said.

His final days were spent at Quiet Oaks Hospice House. Unable to speak due to the throat cancer, Hyde used a white board to communicate, giving the staffers grief when they used improper grammar.

Hyde passed away on 10/13 at 10:13. “It was his final act,” said Saetre. “He did it perfectly.”

The former actor is survived by his wife, two stepchildren, a granddaughter, and his sister.

  1. He was only in two episodes, but he was truly memorable in them! I can STILL hear him singing “Kathleen.” 🙂 Condolences to his family and friends on his loss.

  2. Bruce would doubtless have used his whiteboard to say about the clip caption “O’Rileys here is plural; O’Riley’s here is the contraction that is really meant”! He will always be a young man full of life in my memory.

  3. Aww man, I really like him in TOS. I was always sad there wasn’t more of him in the show. RIP Bruce and thanks for the memories

  4. And as luck would have it “The Naked Time” is on Me-TV Saturday night. May we all sing along with “Kathleen”. nRIP Mr Hyde

  5. Sad news. Spent ages clicking to get the article up (main page on this revamped site is crap) while thinking he couldn’t have been that old. Then I finally get the piece up and see the dreaded “cancer” word. It’s been such a bad year for Trek actors passing.
