Quinto: More Theater Roles, Less Personal Speculation
2 min readZachary Quinto, best-known to Star Trek fans as the new Spock, and to sci-fi fans as Sylar, has expressed a desire to have theater as well as movie and television roles become part of his career.
Currently appearing as Louis Ironson in Tony Kushner‘s play Angels in America, Quinto admits that this is part of his plan to achieve that goal. “This is hopefully a declaration of my intention to have theater be a much more significant part of my career from this point forward,” he said. “I look at the work that I’ve done so far as an investment to that end.”
In Angels in America, Quinto’s character Ironson abandons his lover when the man comes down with AIDS. A strong advocate of gay rights himself, Quinto deflects questions as to his own sexuality, preferring that discussion on important gay issues takes the place of speculation about his personal life. “The fact that these things [gay marriage, ‘don’t ask, don’t tell’ and gay bullying/suicide] are such hot-button issues right now, socially and politically; I would much rather talk about that than who I sleep with,” he said. “I would love to be a voice in this maelstrom of chaos and obsessive celebrity infatuation that says, ‘Let’s talk about something that matters.'”
Having a theater role that addresses concerns near to his heart is important to Quinto. “To return to the theater is one thing,” he said. “But to return to the theater doing a play of this import and resonance, it’s beyond thrilling.”
