Abrams Probably Directing, Release Late 2012 Or Summer 2013

2 min read

Still have June 29, 2012 marked on your calendar? You might still be able to watch a Paramount film then — but it’s getting increasingly clear that the new Trek film might suffer a delay of as much as a year.

Deadline reported yesterday that J.J. Abrams has just returned from his holiday and has begun working with Roberto Orci, Alex Kurtzman and Damon Lindelof on the script for Star Trek XII. He hasn’t yet formally committed to directing the film, but according to Deadline, he’s inching ever closer to making that decision. There seems to be no possible way for him to get the film ready in less than a year, so the studio is now apparently considering moving the release date to either late 2012 or the summer of 2013.

Deadline confirmed this week’s report that shooting for the film is likely to begin in January of next year. The studio has already exercised its option on the film’s cast, meaning they will be ready when Abrams is. Paramount has also made the decision to release G.I. Joe: Retaliation on the date they were originally going to release the new Trek film, so they don’t lose that date to another studio.

Meanwhile, MTV this week posted an interview with Trek producer Damon Lindelof, who discussed the script-writing process, and said they were aiming to make their second film better than the first one — just like The Dark Knight improved on the already well-received Batman Begins. “We are deep into that process now and writing,” he said.

  1. Yawn, these guys don’t have a clue. “We’re not just lying around”, and Abrams the on again off again director who can’t make up his mind. Sounds like these blokes made the first one too well and are now stumbling around hopelessly trying to figure out what to do with the second one. They probably still sitting around trying to figure out how to remake the Wrath of Khan, but forgetting some other bloke did that 9 years ago (nemesis), the very reason they now have jobs doing this.

  2. “…they were aiming to make their second film better than the first one…” What an inane statement. Duh. I would hope that’s always the goal with any sequel. The fact that no plot details whatsoever have been leaked means that there is no plot yet. There is no idea. There is nothing written. I fear they are going to cobble something together while sitting around the pool.
