Star Trek Into Darkness And Beyond

2 min read

Star Trek into Darkness isn’t quite finished yet, but there is already talk about the movie to follow it.

Producer Bryan Burk introduced a screening of the first half-hour of the movie to reporters this weekend and gave an update on the progress of the movie, as well as looking ahead into the future of the franchise.

The London screening featured the first twenty-eight minutes of the movie, plus two later scenes, but the footage was raw footage without final special effects, sound effects or 3D. Burk explained why additional footage of the movie has been released. “The thing we are perpetually going through every time we release a movie is the studio saying, ‘You’ve gotta get material out!’ We’re like, ‘No, hold it back!’ We like the idea of keeping secrets not for any other reason than to keep the experience of going to the movies and not having seen anything before it.

“In this case, we figured that people had already seen the first nine minutes and we could show the conclusion of that sequence. We figured if we go longer it’ll give people the time to get emotionally into the story and characters. You want this to be a movie that anybody can get into. It’s not really a sequel; it’s its own thing.”

Expect goodies for Star Trek fans. “one of the things is that the movie will always be for Star Trek fans,” said Burk. “In the process of all us five producers working together, Roberto Orci and Damon Lindelof, to a slightly lesser extent, are crazy-hardcore Trekkies. They understand the world so we had long conversations where they put things in and would be laughing hysterically. I had no clue why they were! There are tons of references and nods.”

Director J.J. Abrams was unable to attend the London screening, but appeared in a video introduction to the preview. “My hair is a disaster,” he joked, “and that’s why I couldn’t be there today because I’m having my hair fixed in an emergency procedure.”

Abrams is so busy with Star Trek into Darkness, said Burk, that he hasn’t been able to turn his attention to the new Star War film.

Although Star Trek into Darkness hasn’t released yet, the third movie of the rebooted series is under discussion. With 2016 being the fiftieth anniversary of Star Trek, could the next movie be released that year? “We’re definitely talking about the next one, but we haven’t talked about a release date” said Burk. “We don’t want to wait four years, the same amount of time between the last one and this one, but it’s going to be a big year to celebrate, hopefully.”

Star Trek into Darkness opens in the UK on May 9 and in the US on May 17.

  1. I am up for it, if it bothers you so much why are you reading the news items?

  2. Again with the Trek is dead idea. You are aware that between 1966 and 2001 we had star trek plots that included Spock’s brain is stolen, a species that communicates with whales accidentally wipes out starfleet and the senior staff are accidentally turned into children (and their clothes are inexplicably miniaturised too), Trek09 is just as imperfect as any other entry. If you didnt like it, that is fine thats your perogative but why the need to come on here slating an installment you havent seen and a future installment with no confirmed writer, directer, script, cast etc etc.

  3. This doesn’t make any sense. There were many gaps without Star Trek between those years and you can always go back and watch the episodes and movies you like. To say it died in 2001 is an insult to the legacy of Star Trek.

  4. For a kick off that 2001 date includes Voyager… ha ha I’m being controversial for ironic purposes.

  5. Its weird this site, a mere handful of posters, the same opinions, I had a brilliant time with that movie and I anticipate more of the same in this one. I would have thought the average Trekker would be up for Trek 09? I’d be interested to hear an alternative pitch from people who disliked Trek09. What would the story be? At least that would be an interesting conversation instead of one liner comic book guy responses. “First post, Worst Star Trek ever, I have my tickets booked for 17th May”

  6. I think the average Trekker might be a fan of the reboot series but it’s just the ones who aren’t fans feel the need to comment more frequently lol

  7. They must have had seizures watching the Phantom Menace, now that WAS a bad movie. I wonder where that silent majority are? I thought this was a big deal Trek website but it just seems small, and as you say a bit sad. Like a village pub you walk into and everyone just turns and stares at you.

  8. So Daniel what are you looking forward to based on the trailer?
I am looking forward to the John Harrison reveal, its really good that in the age of spoilers and the internet we simply have no idea who he is? I am also looking forward to the space action sequences, in 3d no less! Too many Star Trek DS9 battles were played out as dots on a monitor I am well up for some space action. I am interested in knowing to what extend Noel Clarke’s arc is about the current advances in medical technology and whether they should be embraced at all costs (although maybe its just Harrison messing with him?), I wonder to what extent Starfleet will be portrayed as ‘paranoid’ following Nero’s attack? Lastly I am looking forward to some good old fashioned Spock, Kirk and McCoy banter, I am hoping for fewer plot holes than Trek09 and more of the human drama we saw in the stunning Kelvin sequence. A new Star Trek film we know little about is due in a matter of weeks, I cannot wait!

  9. You mean September of 1966.

As always, this insane and extreme purist mentality of Star Trek never ceases to amaze me. Aside from the foolish mishandling of the franchise at the hands of Rick Berman, Ronald Moore, Brannon Braga, and staff, this purist mentality was also part of the reason why Star Trek went into that franchise fatigue period in the first place.

Talk about the rise of the Fourth Reich!

  10. That’s BS. It was greed that caused the eventual franchise fatigue, not some “purist mentality”. The studio simply couldn’t resist milking that cow called Star Trek. What Fourth Reich are you talking about? Are you delusional?

  11. I wasn’t think that this half ironic / half sarcastic “Rest in Space” comment make a lot of controversy. I do not mean Star Trek is dead, it is just the vision of JJ and his gang: ST “tired”, “not working anymore”, so kill it and make something else which can sell as ST just to get even more money.

Just some foreword: my favorite ST series: TNG, my favorite ST movie: Insurrection, I see every ST episode and movie, some I like, some not.

I do not understand why some people say that this is a “purist” thinking. We have five series with hundreds of very different episodes, 10 movies, some with more action, others with more emotional plot, some just entertain the audience, others make people think about the future or the present of mankind.
Those episodes and movies all share something which made it Star Trek. I don’t know what is it exactly, maybe the actors’ and creators’ heart and soul in it, or the intelligent, resourceful, “future-visioning” thinking behind the making the world of Star Trek, or maybe we haven’t yet a word to describe the soul of Trek, but it have a big power: it can open the eyes of people, it can get people together, it show how can we make better our future, which will be our very own present tomorrow. It show us too that we are all different in the sense of skin color, religion, thinking, and the taste about movies, so it’s not surprising that some people likes the JJTrek and some not, and I am sure that the “purist” trekkers, like me, do not get angry because the JJTrek good or bad (it is a matter of taste), nor the action (we have a lot of action-filled episodes), but because those JJ-guys call Star Trek something which not Star Trek. I know it have a “redshirt who will die”, and I see the 47, and the ship called Enterprise, but it does not enough for people who once get the “feeling of Star Trek”. JJ do not make Star Trek, he admittedly make “something else”, because he think the “old” Trek “need a reboot”. But if it “something else”, then it not Star Trek, and calling it Start Trek will upset hundreds of thousands people. I see some “smart guy” who think that the “dumb trekkers” get satisfied a bunch of quotes from old movies and episodes. JJ make a big hype about “secrecy”, because if we know that there will be klingons (or Carol Marcus etc.), then we will get absolutely no “surprise” and the movie won’t be enjoyable… There are a loooot of old episodes which enjoyable even if the viewer see it a dozen times before. But the JJTrek is “see once and forget it”, it have nothing to say, it have nothing to think, it have nothing Trek. Maybe an enjoyable space-action-bigboom-movie, but definitely not ST.

We, the trekkies, need Star Trek. I know I can see the old episodes, but ST is about forward thinking, not backward thinking. We need more ST, not “something else which called ST”. I am a purist? Maybe, but if I go to theater to see a movie which title is Star Trek, then I want to see Star Trek, not a brainless movie like the 2009 JJTrek.

It was a word years before that some people (creators of different ST series, I don’t remember names) want to continue ST with a series, after the Voyager arrived home. It would be nice if Paramount give them green light.

  12. Sounds like you’re just as pumped about it as me! There are so many things I’m looking forward to. Like you said, to find out who exactly Cumberbatch’s character turns out to be and what his motives are is one thing that has me really interested. Someone said in an interview that he’s a bad guy but not at the same time. I’m curious about how they will try to make the audience sympathize with him when so far it looks like he’s a bloodthirsty terrorist out for revenge.

I’m also really looking forward to the space action. Cannot wait to see if the Enterprise is actually destroyed with plans for a refit/new ship in the next movie or if they decide to salvage it and/or refit it anyway haha.

And of course I’m also looking forward to the character development between and during the new movie.

    Oh, and Klingons! Because… Klingons!

  13. Apologies for grabbing the wrong end of the stick. Wow Star Trek 5 it’s been a while since I saw that, on a related note I joined the William Shatner fan club in January and today his autograph turned up in the post, it’s him in an early TOS promo shot, the one where he is holding the Enterprise model. I am we’ll chuffed! Best £20 I ever spent!

  14. To me it totally did feel Star Trek. I hope the next instalment is better for you.

  15. Yeah the whole sympathetic terrorist angle makes DS9 all the more relevant and edgy today. A sympathetic villain is really interesting and Cumberbatch is such a talent, I think the franchise is very lucky to scoop him up at this stage in his career. I’ve got to say I am not so up for our friends the Klingons I was always much more interested in the Romulans. I think they planned to blow up the Enterprise in the first one. I think we could see anything, it’s all up for grabs. Earphones in when I go and see the movie, there is always one idiot who sits in the theatre saying all the spoilers really loudly, like having the Internet is skill or talent and one that is unique to them. I enjoyed the 9 minute preview May can’t come quickly enough.

  16. Daniel Ireland, you, The_Comic, and Polaris01313-1 are the ones swilling cheap whiskey and roast potatoes at closing time. There are a lot of us who want fine drink and food from our Star Trek. Abrams’ ST doesn’t cut it. Agreeing among yourselves that anyone who loathes Abrams ST is a negative purist is, as you stated above, “so negative it’s sad.”

There are a lot of eloquent posters here and many of them have made a strong case for what’s wrong with Abrams view of the mythology. The now common use of “Spock’s Brain” by others as some measure of the junk ST can pump out isn’t a very solid defense of the shinier, noisier junk that Abrams is pumping out now.

  17. Hey, as long as it says Whiskey on the bottle, I’ll drink it. (Just kidding.)

I understand why some people don’t like JJ’s Star Trek and I’m not saying all the posters who feel this way are being nagative. Just the ones bashing the film that hasn’t even come out yet and going on and on about how Trek isn’t what it used to be.

  18. No problems. I personally think people take Star Trek far to seriously. It is firstly meant to be an entertaining view of the future, and as the future hasn’t happened, the stories told can be infinitely diverse and varied, taking us to places from our imaginations. I mentioned Star Trek V, which was mediocre at best, and the critics and fans alike rightfully panned. But it did have just a few good points, if only to see known and familiar characters again. Is Star Trek Into Darkness better or worst? I do think we will just have to wait and see. I’m open-minded, so I see it and buy the film on DVD when it comes out.

I’m so pleased you got your memento. I have nothing like that at all – so your one up on me!.

  19. So here is the fan club URL http://williamshatner.com/ws/fan-club/join-fan-club/ the autograph took 6 weeks to come but now it’s here and framed I am very very happy. I live in England where conventions and things are quite rare, so far I have met Nicole deBoer, Marina Sirtis, Walter Koenig, JGHertler, Armin Shimmerman, Chase Masterson, Robert Picardo and Max Groedenchik (not sure I’ve spelled that right). I’d love to meet William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy, Patrick Stewart or Andrew Robinson. With the exception of Walter Koenig they were all really nice. Walter was a bit subdued, I’m not taking it personally! I kinda like the camping stuff in 5 and really the central premise is pretty trek, in Shetners book Movie Memories he details a lot of what went on behind the scenes and it was a troubled film for lots of reasons. as you say it’s not the best but you can still find moments to love, like the opening with the bald guy in the desert is pretty cinematic

  21. If you want noisier junk, look at Starship Farragut and Star Trek Continues. if you want to brand those swilling cheap whiskey and roast potatoes, you need not look any further than John Broughton, Michael Bednar, Vic Mignogna, Dennis Bailey, Alec Peters, and anyone else associated with Farragut Films.

  22. No, it is more of a commentary on the anti-Abrams statements and the constant bashing on the man who brought life back into Star Trek. By the harshness of those statements, they are definitely purist in content and language. And as I recall from history, The Third Reich had a purist mentality that really got out of control. See the comparison?

If not, I wouldn’t be surprised.

  23. Agreeing among yourselves that anyone who loathes Abrams ST is a negative purist is, as you stated above, “so negative it’s sad.”

I don’t think you are reading my comments, or at least you are choosing to misunderstand. I am not for a minute suggesting Trek09 is the greatest example of cinema or trek, nor am I suggesting that if you don’t like it oh are a “negative purist” I a stating 4 I things

1, That in the last 50 years Trek has had it’s share of silly stories; spocks brain, trouble with tribbles, rascals, q-pid, voyage home, our man bashir, take me out to the holodeck to name a few. To dismiss these and other stories is short sighted as they are very much an indelible part of what makes trek trek. They represent a lot of hard work and time by artists trying to entertain us and for some people these lighter episodes will be their favourite, just like some days I want to watch Seinfeld and not schindlers list.
2, based on the observation above I simply do not understand what a ‘purist’ trekker is, let alone sign up to using the term. Do so called purists fast forward through every special effect, joke, action sequence or kiss in star trek on the grounds it’s not hardcore sci fi? If they do then they are fast forwarding through 99% of Star Trek! I think purist simply describes someone who didn’t appreciate Trek09 but instead of simply saying that, for some reason they have adopted a new and, frankly, offensive term as a way of elevating themselves above people who did enjoy trek 09. “Oh you enjoyed that garbage? You aren’t a ‘purist’ like me, not a proper trekker” unfortunately for all ‘purists’ trek09 is there, it exists, say you didn’t like it and tell me why but don’t make out I am an idiot for enjoying it and don’t tell me it deviates so far from the original when it doesn’t, it’s entirely consistent with the source.
3, that spending your time slating something you haven’t seen is short sighted and yes sad. I hated the Star Wars prequels, so you know what I didn’t buy them, I don’t watch them and I can tell you in no less than 10,000 words why they are three of the worst films ever made. Do you think I spent the last 15 years on StarWars.com telling people they are idiots for liking the Star Wars prequels? The answer is no, I simply have better things to do with my time. That rubbish has eaten enough of my life already!
4, I am not seeing any decent articulation of what purists like or want or would do instead, I’m just seeing one sentence soundbites. I feel a bit sorry for the web team, writing and publishing stories about something hey love takes time effort and money. For that effort to result in half a dozen bitchy, unfounded and ill informed comments at the bottom of each news item about a film that isnt out of pst production yet is deflating. f it was my website I might one day think “fk this no one is interested” and pull the plug. And that would be a loss to all of us surely.

  24. Really? People who don’t like Abrams are NAZIS? I think you just murdered, cooked and ate Godwin.

  25. The way they are sounding off in their responses(which has been pretty hateful and purist like)sounds awfully close to it.

  26. Take Star Trek too seriously??? I’ll kill you for that, John Bigboote’!

Wha? …oh, right. Meds. I’ll um, be right back.
