Lindelof On Eve Scene

Damon Lindelof has taken a bit of heat lately for the Alice Eve underwear scene and now he has responded to the criticism.
The scene in question was heavily featured in ad spots promoting the movie.
The Eve scene really didn’t seem to serve a purpose in the movie other than showing a woman in her underwear, and critics and others have lambasted the writers over the gratuitous scene, to which criticism Lindelof has responded via his Twitter feed.
“I copped to the fact that we should have done a better job of not being gratuitous in our representation of a barely-clothed actress,” Lindelof said. “We also had Kirk shirtless in underpants in both movies,” he said, attempting to justify the Eve scene. “Do not want to make light of something that some construe as mysogenistic. What I’m saying is I hear you; I take responsibility and will be more mindful in the future. Also, I need to learn how to spell ‘misogynistic.'”
When asked by MTV News‘ Josh Horowitz why Eve was in her underwear, Lindelof said, “Why is Alice Eve in her underwear, gratuitously and unnecessarily, without any real effort made as to why in God’s name she would undress in that circumstance? Well there’s a very good answer for that. But I’m not telling you what it is. Because … uh … mystery?”

Lindelof really should have been more on the ball with this because I felt the scene – while clearly made with the box office, teenage boys and the trailer in mind – said more about Kirk and not being able to resist looking than anything else. We know these characters have more costume changes than Beyonce and they were about to shuttle down on a dangerous mission, so sure, why not quickly get changed in the shuttle?
Look, I KNOW it’s gratuitous and unecessary, but welcome to Popcorn Movies 2013. And since when has Star Trek NOT had beautiful women dancing around in their undies. You telling me Vima in The Cage was writhing around just to serve the story? I’d argue that while controversial, this scene underlines how immature Kirk is, all part of building up his character towards the Shatner era/Five Year Mission Kirk (if this iteration of Kirk develops that way of cdourse).
But then I’m far more bothered by gratuitous violence than an attractive blond in her knickers, but that’s just me.
Again, the guest wasn’t me… but, again, I guess the powers that be are fine with you going after anyone you think is me… carry on. lol
It’s not that she was in her underwear, it’s that turning Kirk into a petulant douche in the first movie wasn’t enough, now he’s a straight up pervert. She asked him to turn around. The James T. Kirk I know doesn’t need to sneak looks at hot women, they throw themselves at him…
What? That was the best scene in the movie! Besides a lot of the great scifi films of the 70s had gratuitous nudity.
This is what passes for a major screenwriter now? He barely has a grasp of the English language, let alone basic storytelling, plot, characterization, dialogue…
The sad thing is I’m sure it was. However one would think that such a highly paid and sought-after screenwriter would perhaps be able to, y’know, work it in to the story a little bit better? it all comes off as a sad attempt to shoehorn cheesecake in to try and lure in the all-important 18-24 male demographic after they found out that action and explosions weren’t doing the trick.
Lindehof doesn’t have a ball to be on.
What I find sad is that so many of the good things we find about scenes like this are things we infer that the so-called screenwriters never even thought of. If he had, I somehow think he’d say, “Why the underwear? Why, to show how much of a perv/horndog/growing boy Kirk is!” instead of “Uhh… mystery?”
No doubt… if you’re going to steal from Nic Meyer, at least do a better job of it. He could probably sue, but I doubt he wants his own work associated with this.
Word.
There really is no comparison between STID and Meyer’s screenplay and direction.
The most interesting thing for me is that TWOK, despite being ‘slower’ and despite the fact that I have seen it countless times, still holds my attention and feels more tense that STID did on first viewing.
No one trusts you dogpoo. Do it once, and your forever a turd, turd.
Which is hilarious, since I’ve seen you do it… but anyway.
Besides, even Zardoz tried to put some thought into it.
Now, did you really need to taint the image above with the one in my mind of Sean Connery from Zardoz?!?! lol
Is it possible that the studio can leave this guy back at the playground with his Khan and bra and panties, Carol doll, for the next movie?
