Orci: Fantasy Vs. Science Fiction

Television has been turning to fantasy lately instead of science fiction, and Star Trek into Darkness‘ Roberto Orci thinks he knows why.
According to Orci, science fiction has hit a “stumbling block.”
“Part of it I think you can see sci-fi has slightly hit a stumbling block in some of the summer stuff that we saw,” said Orci. “I think maybe it’s typical a little bit that you jump between [being] totally logical and something a little bit more whimsical.”
Current TV fantasy hits include HBO’s Game of Thrones, and ABC’s Once Upon a Time.
Orci has a new show coming out in the fantasy genre, Sleepy Hollow. In Sleepy Hollow, Ichabod Crane is resurrected and pulled two-and-a-half centuries through time to find that the world is on the brink of destruction and that he is humanity’s last hope, and he must team up with a contemporary police officer to unravel a mystery that dates all the way back to the Founding Fathers.”
Sleepy Hollow will debut on September 16.

I’m curious what science fiction he’s talking about… Unless he’s suggesting something about his own mediocre work in STD.

Hit a stumbling block. If I understand the fool’s meaning, I surmise he’s talking about in terms of saleability, audience preference.
First, I don’t think he understands what science fiction is, versus fantasy. or for that matter, fantasy versus a hole in the ground.
Second, he clearly doesn’t understand that it is not a sharply delineated dichotomy. For instance, what he piddles is science fantasy.
Third, I think what happened this summer is audiences got their fill of crap early on and left the trough.
Lastly… Have I said any kind words about Roberto Orci lately? If so, I take them all back, coat them with pitch, light them on fire and shove them right straight up his ass.
He’s hit nothing but a rock, as you have.
Let’s see you do better, then-submit a script for a movie or TV show that would be accepted by Paramount/CBS/Bad Robot and that isn’t a fan wank. Oh yeah, I forget-you can’t.

he is right-fantasy has a broader appeal in film/tv right now, especially with a female audience.
