For Zachary Quinto, now appearing in Tennessee William‘s The Glass Menagerie, the reviews are favorable.

Quinto has taken on the role of Tom in the production, the son of a “fading Southern belle.”

According to David Rooney of the Hollywood Reporter, “The Glass Menagerie is “a performance of towering complexity from Cherry Jones…No less impressive is Zachary Quinto’s knockout Broadway debut as Williams’ most nakedly autobiographical character, Tom.”

No ifs, ands or buts – The Glass Menagerie should break your heart,” said Joe Dziemianowicz of The New York Daily News. “The new Broadway revival starring Cherry Jones and Zachary Quinto cracks it wide open. Quinto, of the Star Trek reboot, streaks Tom, the stand-in for Williams, with exasperation and surliness. His cruel abandonment of his family in the dark is all the more credible.”

“There’s much to praise here,” said Variety‘s Robert Hofler, “but the major revelation is Quinto, who presents a Tom (Tennessee’s real first name) who can, and does, go mano-a-mano with his near-monster of a mother, Amanda, played by Jones.

“These are two big, flamboyant performances. Tom warns us in the play’s first minutes that this isn’t life but rather memory, and like all things remembered, there’s a sense of exaggeration. Watching Jones and Quinto in those opening moments can be bracing, maybe even off-putting, but their many confrontations never fail to explode. Frankly, they’re at each other’s jugular right from the get-go.”

  1. Quinto was astonishingly good in “Heroes;” I wish I were able to see his work in “The Glass Menagerie,” because I’m sure he was fabulous.
