Fuller On New Trek TV
1 min readIf Bryan Fuller had his way, the next Star Trek would be appearing on television.
Fuller spoke about his desire to see Trek on television, and what he would like to see, while doing publicity for Hannibal, which he created and which will begin its second season next year.
“I expressed interest that I would love to do a Star Trek TV show,” said Fuller. “Again, that was my very first start, on Deep Space Nine and Voyager. That was my first job as a writer in Hollywood. So having spent four years on staff and another year of freelancing before that on Star Trek, it’s a very near and dear property to my heart, and also a philosophy. I would love to create a Star Trek show, so that’s on my dream docket.”
If Fuller could do Star Trek, what does he have in mind? “I think there’s something very exciting about the new J.J. Abrams-verse, and there’s also kind of an interesting reinvention,” he said. “How would The Next Generation evolve from that? Where would that be? Where would that go? But there’s also…Star Trek is such a big universe, and there are so many places to go with it. I have a very specific idea that I would love to do. We’ll see if I ever get the opportunity.”
If nothing else, the destruction of Romulus would make a great plot. Helping the Romulans with humanitarian efforts, while exploring the Beta Quadrant.
Yeah, Bryan! I loved “Hannibal” last season; I can only imagine if he were at the hands of a DS9-like franchise!
JJ-Verse? No.
I LOVE the idea of a RE-INVENTED NEXT GENERATION Show, Enterprise-D as a different kind of starship, exploring new worlds, boldly going where none have gone, before…
Call me silly and old fashioned, but I rather demand actually going where none have gone before when, you know, going where none have gone before… and I’ve been to the next generation. I don’t need them to re-invent the wheel.
I HATE the idea. Screw that. If they don’t have any ORIGINAL ideas, they shouldn’t do it at all.
No, you’re not silly and old fashioned. You are right.
I sincerely hope Fuller was drunk when he suggested re-inventing TNG in the Abrams-verse image.
I’d like to see a series set in the TOS era, using sets and costumes like those in “Trials and Tribble-ations” and “In a Mirror, Darkly,” with modern special effects like those seen in the remastered TOS episodes. There could even be cameos by the surviving TOS actors: “Sir, there’s a message coming in from Captain Kirk — audio only.”
If by “modern special effects” you mean “poorly thought-out, cheap-assed embarrassments slapped together by CBS Digital that looked like cinematics from a late-’90s video game and actually managed to be inferior to the ’60s effects they were intended to replace”, then yeah, I can get behind that.
Oh wait, no I can’t.
I am all for a new Star Trek original idea. I don’t think we need to keep rebooting old series. Time to go even further into the future with a new ship, a new crew with some familiar faces perhaps,,and new adventures.
Bryan Fuller? Gee, great. Now we can have Republican-bashing like on his other shows. :/
13 high quality cable- ready Showtime episodes per season, no matter the format, Old Trek, NuTrek, consigning NuTrek to a separate cubbyhole in the continuum, in other words, take the concept that time is trying to heal itself and run a mini marathon with the idea. We already have 750 hours of Trek TV. This is the only way to make new Trek on TV stand out in a very crowded universe. Very serialized, a’la Homefront or Breaking Bad; if it is on Showtime [CBS owned] there are many opportunities to catch an episode so serialization is no barrier any more.
Opportunities for previous cast members to show up in guest/ cameo roles to accentuate how the universe /timeline is healing itself.
I want Trek on tv, but if it is set in the JJ-verse, then I’m afraid the glut of quality Star trek continues… *sigh*
Better idea: Bring Star Trek back on NetFlix! Start off with a few new seasons of Enterprise, just so that show can actually properly wrap things up. Then create a brand new show with a new crew. Could be after Enterprise and before TOS (I’d LOVE to see a Robert April/Christopher Pike series!), could be set between the TOS films and TNG, could be right after Nemesis or far into the future, but let’s make it from an era we have not seen.
While the final Enterprise seasons and the new show are going, we could have an animated anthology show that stars all the various crews in small story arcs. It would be a lot cheaper than the live action shows and it might be the only way to “see” the living Star Trek casts reprise their roles one more time. I bet getting Patrick Stewart to play Picard if it was just voice acting would not be a big hard to do.
Personally I’d love to see a series about the USS Titan, and if Frakes and Sirtis aren’t available for a full shooting schedule then have the pilot be the point where Riker is either being promoted or retiring from Starfleet and he’s turning command over to the new Captain for their new adventures with a new crew. I really don’t think the idea of rebooting an old franchise sit well with many fans. In my mind Star Trek has always been about moving forward. Rebooting an old series feels more like rehashing old ideas and trying to rewrite lore. Give me a new ship, a new crew and new enemies and issues to deal with.
