Nimoy Addresses Concerns About His Health

A senior citizen in a wheelchair at a large airport usually doesn’t merit a second glance, but when it was Leonard Nimoy and he was seen using oxygen, Star Trek fans took notice.
The actor was being wheeled through a New York airport on Monday when the photos were taken and fans expressed their concern regarding his use of oxygen after seeing the photos.
Today, the actor addressed his fan base via his Twitter feed, explaining why he was seen using oxygen. “I quit smoking thirty years ago,” he said. “Not soon enough. I have COPD.” [chronic obstructive pulmonary disease]
“Grandpa says, quit now!! LLAP”

Man, that is a shock!
Many actors from the Golden Age of Hollywood have died or been negatively affected from smoking. I’m sad that Nimoy has become a PSA, but no man can escape the consequences of his action, not even Spock.
It’s never fun to see childhood heroes age, and COPD is no joke. But he really doesn’t look bad at all in the photos at the link, and while most 82-year-olds would opt for a wheelchair to get through an endless airport terminal, I doubt he’s confined to it. Good luck Leonard.
I truly truly hope he’s well. All I could think about was how hard it was to get oxygen on a flight for my dad back in the mid-90s. It was truly a chore, and that was well before 9/11. I can only imagine how hard it must be to get such through the crazed bureaucracy of today…

I know something about what Mr. Nimoy has, COPD, since I have it too. My COPD though, came as a result of asthma, not smoking. Asthma coughing attacks are scary. I hope Mr. Nimoy looks after himself, well. You never get cured from COPD, you just cope as well as you can.
Smoking is illogical.
The effects of Nimoy’s smoking were evident in the films.
From Star Trek II and onward, Nimoy’s voice was distinctly RASPY, whereas in the TOS and even, to an extent, TMP, it was normal.
Smoking is horrible. It killed the great John Wayne and now it looks like it’s killing everyone’s favorite Vulcan. 🙁
