Nichols To Receive Award
1 min readThe original series’ Nichelle Nichols will be receiving an award at the Essence 7th Annual Black Women in Hollywood luncheon tomorrow.
The Black Women in Hollywood luncheon “celebrate[s] the top African-American women in the film industry.”
Nichols will receive the Essence Champions Award, which celebrates the fiftieth anniversary of the signing of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, and honors “legendary performers who served as champions of the Civil Rights Movement.” Other honorees include Cicely Tyson, Diahann Carroll, Jim Brown, Denise Nicholas, and Clarence Williams III.
“I will be receiving Essence Champions’ Award on 2/27 along with other actors who were involved in the Civil Rights Movement,” said Nichols on her Facebook page. “This award recognition celebrates the 50th Anniversary of the Civil Rights Act.
“I’ll be receiving the award during Essence’s 7th annual Black Women in Hollywood Luncheon. Past honorees at this Oscar-week event have included Oprah Winfrey, Viola Davis, Kerry Washington, Halle Berry, Shonda Rhimes, Suzanne de Passe, Cicely Tyson, and Gabrielle Union.
“I’m very happy to accept Essence‘s honors and I honor them right back,” said Nichols. “Their positive influence in today’s culture is vitally important now and in the future.”
Others receiving awards at the luncheon include Oscar-nominated Lupita Nyong’o (Best Breakthrough Performance), Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences President Cheryl Boone Isaacs (Trailblazer Award) and award-winning director/writer Ava DuVernay (Visionary Award).
