Star Trek-Like Translator Arrives
1 min readA new demo from Microsoft showed “real-time voice-to-voice” translation.
The service will be used with Skype.
The new translator program can “understand spoken words and translate them into another language, and speak them back almost in real time.”
“Skype has always been about breaking down barriers,” said Gurdeep Pall, corporate vice president of Skype and Lync at Microsoft. “And the language barrier is huge. It has been a blocker to productivity and human connection. Skype Translator helps us overcome this barrier. It’s going to make sure you can communicate with anyone without language barriers.”
Skype Translator will be available for Windows 8 by the end of the year. Microsoft plans to make the translation service available to other platforms.
In the video below, see how it works. Two people speak; one in German, one in English, and their words are translated very quickly so that they can understand each other. The actual demo begins around the halfway part of the video.
