The official word has come; Star Trek 3 will be released in 2016.
The announcement by Paramount came at CineEurope, currently taking place in Spain.
Other movies coming in 2016 include Paranormal Activity 5, a new Ben Hur, Beverly Hills Cop, Transformers 5, GI Joe 3 and Hansel and Gretel 2.
Before then, Paramount 2015 movies will include The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water in 3D, Hot Tub Time Machine 2, The Gambler, Project Almanac, Terminator: Genesis, Friday the 13th in 3D, and Mission Impossible 5.

It’s not surprising that Paramount wants to take advantage of the hoopla that will undoubtedly surround the 50th anniversary of TOS. I hope they take their time and do it right, though — or as right as Paramount is able to do — and don’t just slap something together to make the deadline.
Star Trek 4 will be released in 2791.
I don’t know if I should be mad that they are making another one of these and that it will be the 50th Anniversary film, or if I should be happy that this may actually be the end to this crap fest!
I’d go with “mad”. Such a fine way to “celebrate” the 50th year of a great franchise, by sloshing around in a timeline that reboots and throws out what a succession of great creative teams spent four decades building, by way of a contractual-obligation movie directed (and probably written) by the Patron Saint of Douchebags, set in a universe named for a guy who openly expressed his disdain for Star Trek and who so clearly was just using the franchise as a stepladder toward what he considered to be a much better gig.
As far as I’m concerned the golden anniversary of Trek is really this year, as we observe the 50th of “The Cage”, still one of the finest hours of science-fiction ever filmed.
Sorry, in my timeline Star Trek 3 was released 30 years ago.

Remakes, sequels, reboots… really? There is nothing, like ORIGINAL in the lineup? Let me guess, “Ben Her” will star Kellan Lutz.
I think Capt. Kirk would be great in a crossover film, Star Trek Hot Tub Time Machine. It combines all of the best elements of sci-fi: Ships, bubbles, water and babes!
Well, Paramount would be wise to take a cue from Warner Bros., which is pairing up its two superhero tent poles in the next Superman film by bringing in Batman, Aquaman, Wonder Woman and Cyborg. Obviously, they’re trying to throw a Justice League concept on the wall to see if it will stick for 2017 or 2018. Paramount could either do twin Star Trek films – with Abrams helming his 90210-esque bunch and the old guard returning to film the old guard. Or meld the two timelines in such a way that it doesn’t suck like the anemic Generations.
No, the fabled and famed machine meets its demise in a time travel episode that shows us the new Hot Sonic Shower Time Machine.
If “Ben Her” focuses on a chick then it might be a better movie than “Ben Hur.” Maybe it’s a secret title for “Wonder Woman.”
I may be in a minority here, but it is my favorite of all the ST movies.

Don’t worry, this is good news. 2016 is the beginning of the end for the Abramsverse: the new movie will suck, Transformers style, with its newbie shlocky writer turned director, so badly that the entire project will become discredited.
It’s my second favorite after TWOK. It was all (rather steeply) downhill for the film series after III.
I sometimes watch TWOK and TSFS together (they seem like bookends to me; two halves of a whole) but I don’t buy into TVH as part of a “trilogy” because the music score is so horrid and the photography so bleary and smoky that it kills the mood for me every time. It seems so poorly made, as if sloppily thrown-together in a rush.
A new Ben Hur? Is the 90+ crowd suddenly a hot demographic?
TVH has aged the worst of any, and I mean any, of the movies. It isn’t the 1986 setting so much as the fact that it feels so dated as a 1986 FILM, bound to its time in ways that all of the other Trek movies have mostly escaped. TVH exudes a look and feel of “1980s Paramount comedy”; I group it alongside stuff like “The Naked Gun” and “Beverly Hills Cop”. And this wouldn’t be such a bad thing (TVH is certainly not a bad movie on its own terms) if it hadn’t been designed as the final leg of the “Genesis Trilogy”. On those terms TVH is WILDLY inappropriate and betrays everything that the preceding two movies had set up, right down to the giant reset in (literally) the last five minutes that exonerates Kirk and crew and puts them all back onto a duplicate of their old ship like nothing had ever happened.
John Schuck as a Klingon didn’t help much, either. Nor those cheap goofy alien masks at the tribunal. Or the outer space “giant Tootsie Roll and soccer ball” alien probe. Or the pitiful CGI heads and water drops sequence. Oh, I could go on, but it isn’t necessary…the film is its own worst enemy!
In a perfect world IMO, this would be the last “Nu Trek” movie made and they would just scrap it and start making a new TV show. Let’s get back to TNG timeline and make a post-Voyager show. Wishful thinking, I know, but that’s what I would LOVE to see happen.
Not that I’m advocating for a new Ben Hur (far from it because I hate remakes), but it’s hardly a movie for old people. Ben Hur is one of the best movies ever made and anyone can enjoy it if they are willing to get past the idea of not having explosions every 10 seconds (I’m looking at you Transformers).
I actually have to agree there. TVH is one of my favs and I consider it one of the last good ST movies. ST5 sucked and ST6 was a disappointment. Only First Contact was, IMO, the only TNG movie worth watching (not the fault of the timeline or TNG cast but rather the morons making the stories). And the Abramsverse just sucks.
Cant wait! I wish people would stop going on and on about how bad they think the new star trek is…I think its brilliant! I was always a Star Trek fan and when I went to the cinema in 2009, I didn’t know what to expect as I did not see any trailers or anything before. And I loved it! Into Darkness was really good as well, I mean, sure they used too many plot points from The Wrath of Khan, but overall, I still enjoyed it. Now that we got new writers and a new director, I can’t wait to see what they come up with next. I mean, like most trekkies, I do want to see a little more exploration involved, and there should be no excuse for that since they are now on their Five Year Mission. I think what would really make 2016, besides a film, a new tv series to kick off the 50th anniversary, but dont want it to go back to TNG, I had enough of TNG era stuff, I want something new set in the Star Trek Universe. How about we fast forward another 100-200 years and the found a way to go fast enough to reach other galaxies, and that way there would be a lot more to explore!
