Arlene Martel, best-known to Star Trek fans as T’Pring, the fiancée who jilted Spock in Amok Time, has passed away.

The actress was seventy-eight years old and died today due to complications after recent heart surgery.

Born in the Bronx, Martel’s show biz career began in 1958 when she played Maria in Behind Closed Doors.

Besides Star Trek, Martel appeared in many shows such as Death Valley Days, Have Gun Will Travel, Twilight Zone (Twenty Two, What You Need), Route 66, The Untouchables, Ben Casey, The Outer Limits, The Man from U.N.C.L.E., My Favorite Martian, I Dream of Jeannie, Perry Mason, Hogan’s Heroes, Columbo, Battlestar Galactica, and more.

Martel appeared in the Star Trek fan film Of Gods and Men, where she played a Vulcan Priestess.

“Saying goodbye to T’Pring,” Arlene Martel,” said Leonard Nimoy, via Twitter. “A lovely talent.”

“Saddened to hear Arlene Martel, T’Pring in Star TrekAmok Time has died,” said Michael Okuda. “She also starred in Outer Limits: Demon with a Glass Hand.”

Married three times, Martel had two sons and a daughter.

  1. Arlene Martel…was such a beautiful person who I knew well for many decades. A younger Arline Sax was James Dean’s girlfriend in NYC during the early 1950’s before Dean became a film star. Besides being a talented actress in nearly 100 TV episodes, Arlene co-starred in Angels From Hell…now a motorcycle cult movie filmed in 1968. Recently Arlene attended the UCLA Film & TV Archives screening of The James Dean Story (1957). Tasha will be missed by her loyal fans and movie land friends. My condolences to her family.
