Star Trek into DarknessBenedict Cumberbatch is back in negotiations for the role of Doctor Strange.

Cumberbatch was an early choice for the role, but his work schedule got in the way and Marvel reached out to other actors, including Joaquin Phoenix.

Talks with Phoenix went nowhere and with Marvel shooting Doctor Strange later than they had originally planned, the role became an option again for Cumberbatch.

Directed by Scott Derrickson and written by Jon Spaihts, Doctor Strange “centers on a former neurosurgeon who serves as the Sorcerer Supreme — the primary protector of Earth against magical and mystical threats.”

The character first made his appearance in the Marvel Universe over fifty years ago, in the pages of Strange Tales No. 110.

Doctor Strange will be released July 8, 2016.

  1. Finally, a role I can get excited about Cumberbatch playing! The man was no Kahn, but this I can see him pulling off and making it his own.

  2. Actually, I can definitely picture him as part of the Hasty Pudding troupe playing Madeline.

  3. He’s a bit young for the part…and his head is shaped like a bowling pin. And I hope he’s good with accents, since Dr. Strange is from Philadelphia, and I don’t know that he needs to be changed to British for the heck of it.
