Quinto: If I Wasn’t An Actor…
1 min readZachary Quinto praised the benefits of therapy and expressed his admiration for psychologists.
The actor, who has been in therapy himself over the years, would even go into the field himself if he was not an actor.
“[I’d] probably be a psychologist [if I was not an actor],” he said. “I love therapy – I’ve been in therapy for a long time. I think psychologists are a tremendous benefit to people if you’re prepared to dive in as far as you’re willing to go into yourself. So I feel that if I didn’t have an outlet to express that exploration in acting, I’d want to be engaged on a fuller level in psychotherapy.
“To be able to be a guide for other people – that’s an aspect of what we do as actors in the characters we play, especially when they’re as archetypal as Spock.”
That’s really interesting, because when Leonard Nimoy was asked what profession he’d have if he couldn’t be in any of the arts, he gave the same answer: psychologist.
Though no one can replace the greatness that was Leonard Nimoy, it looks as if Zachary Quinto is a worthy heir in more ways than one. 🙂
He’s still too young to play Spock. I just wish he and Pine would come back in 10 years time along with the rest of the cast.
Actually he’s currently 3 years older than Nimoy was in the first season of TOS.
But all those smokes Nimoy puffed made him appear at least a decade older.
Grammar nitpick: the past unreal tense should be “if I were not an actor.”
> “[I’d] probably be a psychologist [if I was not an actor],” he said. “I love therapy – I’ve been in therapy for a long time.”
Not exactly a ringing endorsement of the profession then. If you have to be in therapy for years, then I wouldn’t exactly describe it as effective.
Do you get your oil in your car changed regularly, or do you reckon that that one time that got the light to turn off was enough?
Blast it, Jim, He’s an actor, not a doctor (of education)
Oh, so psychological treatment “wears out”? It’s a dumb analogy. Try again. Or not.
What a content-free article.
Some people keep seeing their therapists or counselors because they find it beneficial to stay on top of things even if they are not currently having a crisis. Think of it as a tune-up. If you prefer a different analogy, try a coach or personal trainer. Or a rabbi, priest, imam, guru, whatever. Or tech support. How often do you have to clean up your PC or your phone just from day-to-day use, even without a crisis? The mind is quite complex, and some people find regular maintenance with a skilled professional to be helpful.
How old do you think these actors are? Three are in their thirties and three are in their forties. Yelchin is the youngest at 26.
